EATING OUT

Meixner’s Gastwirtschaft

Buchengasse 64, 1100 Wien, Austria; www.meixners-gastwirtschaft.at
Almost everyone we visit in Vienna recommends this place. “Gasthaus cuisine is exceptional,” says Erwin. “First of all it reflects the history of Viennese cuisine, as it is a melting pot of cuisines, influenced by the Czechs, the Hungarians, the Balkan countries. There are some gasthauses in Vienna that do a wonderful job. Meixner’s is five minutes from here. Typically Viennese cuisine. Very good.”

Gasthaus Wolf (pictured above)

Große Neugasse 20, 1040 Wien, Austria; www.gasthauswolf.at

“If you’re going to the Naschmarkt, you have to go to Urbanek, a really small delicatessen in the market. Go there and ask for a snack. You will get some cheese and a glass of wine. This is a place I can really recommend.”
